1831, Virginia in the United States. Nat Turner led an enslaved uprising that killed dozens before being crushed. Turner said he acted under visions and biblical inspiration. Later reprisals were defended as protecting a Christian social order and preventing further divinely framed revolt.

Why religion survives
One of the ways religion persists is through social reinforcement. Believers cluster together. Shared assumptions go untested. Agreement feels like validation. The absence of dissent is mistaken for proof. Within this echo chamber, disbelief feels rare and dangerous even when it is widespread. Religion thrives in this atmosphere because it is seldom confronted.
