In the name of religion
1478 onward, Spain. The Spanish Inquisition targeted Jews and Muslims who had converted to Christianity but were suspected of false belief. Arrests, torture, and executions were justified as defending Catholic orthodoxy, purifying society, and saving souls from heresy and divine punishment.

In Hinduism, spiritual guidance from a teacher known as a guru is often valued, with the guru seen as someone who helps a student understand spiritual teachings, practise discipline, and progress on a chosen path.
The right to offend
When it comes to offence, science provides the clearest contrast to religion. Scientists offend one another constantly by challenging results, questioning assumptions, and exposing error. No one is protected from scrutiny, and ideas rise or fall on evidence alone. This is not hostility. It is progress, because truth never requires protection from offence. Religion, by contrast, has spent centuries shielding itself from examination while shaping reality to suit doctrine. That protection is weakening. Open discussion, even when uncomfortable, remains humanity’s only reliable path forward, and protecting belief from offence protects nothing worth saving, while protecting the right to offend protects the future itself.
