2020, France, Nice. An Islamist extremist killed worshippers in a church. The attacker framed the act as revenge for perceived insults to Islam and justified killing civilians as part of a religious struggle against unbelievers.

Proof of fragility
A religious apologist is an individual who engages in the systematic defense, justification, and explanation of religious doctrines, faith, and beliefs. Apologetics is not proof of religion’s strength but of its fragility. Every defence admits that something went wrong, and every explanation patches a crack, so the structure remains upright not because it is strong but because so much effort is spent holding it together. Those who defend nonsense are rarely malicious. They are sincere, believing they are protecting something precious, yet what they protect is the illusion that belief ever stood without them, and once that illusion falls, the need for defence disappears because the belief no longer needs saving and the arguments no longer need inventing, leaving only the recognition that a god who cannot speak clearly without human correction is not divine, and a message that collapses without defenders was never self-evident, for the defence itself is inseparable from the failure and stands as its most decisive proof.
